Becoming a radiologist requires many years of education and training. With a medical license, a radiologist is legally able to diagnose and treat patients, however, being licensed does not designate a specialty or subspecialty within the field of radiology.
The American Board of Radiology gives radiologists the opportunity to be recognized for their knowledge and skills in a specific specialty area within the field of Radiology. In order to earn a board certification, a radiologist must pass a board certification exam to demonstrate this expertise.
Once a radiologist has earned their board certification, participation in continuing education is required to ensure they stay up to date in their specialty area.
The American Board of Medical Specialties lists six core competencies which are maintained by Board Certified physicians:
- Practice-based learning and improvement
- Patient care and procedural skills
- Systems-based practice
- Medical knowledge
- Interpersonal and Communication skills
- Professionalism
